I employed Bruce Peters to represent me in a serious criminal matter back in December, 2016 after seeing him on TV successfully defend an alleged murderer. I thought if this guy can get him off for Murder, he's the right guy for me. I rang his office and Bruce answered directly, so no going around in circles talking to a receptionist, making appointments and talk of money up front. Initially, I was very impressed as I could speak to Bruce straight away on the phone without getting the runaround. I met with him and was equally impressed so decided to retain his services. We discussed the case at length, I professed my innocence and Bruce stated he believed I was innocent. I had no intentions of pleading guilty and knew I had to go to trial. As an ex Police Officer, I have a better understanding of the legal system than most but also had faith in it and knew, "I am innocent until proven guilty".
My trial didn't come up for around 18 months but in that time I had 2 or 3 court "mentions" I was required to attend. Bruce and I only met a handful of times in that period and a number of other times on the phone as it wasn't necessary until trial time drew closer. Bruce asked me for an initial deposit which was to be held in trust, however his estimate of costs changed several times. His accounting left a lot to be desired as it took months for him to furnish a receipt for monies paid for deposit and any subsequent payments. As we were going to trial, it was decided we needed to employ a Barrister, so Bruce highly recommended, Ms. Janice CRAWFORD. We met with her and again, suitably impressed and she also stated after reviewing the case notes, she believed I was innocent. Over the coming months both of them stated on more than one occasion they believed I would be acquitted. I had also done my own research and due diligence and provided counsel with "evidence". Both stated they had never had a client do so much work and provide evidence to prove their innocence.
Approximately 12 months after being charged and on "bail" I received a knock on the door to be met by 2 uniformed police with an Warrant for my arrest. I was taken to the Police Station in custody where I was able to call my Lawyer. Bruce then proceeded to blame his secretary who had failed to lodge court documents and as a consequence I was arrested for failing to appear in court, yet no-one bothered to tell me of a pending hearing. Fortunately, I was released with no further charge.
When trial date came, we had a number of discussions about our plan of attack and it had been decided we would present evidence and I would be required to give evidence on the stand. I had no problem with this at all as I had been in the witness stand on many occasions previously.
On the day of my trial I arrived in court to be greeted by Bruce having a sleep on the benches outside the court in the foyer waiting area. He had a 'big night!" This concerned me greatly as the one day I needed him as sharp as a tack and he was half asleep. My Barrister, Ms. Janice CRAWFORD informs me she feels as though it won't be a good idea to give evidence, so we go to trial on that basis and we remain silent. I never said one word in court, was not addressed other than to say "Guilty or Not Guilty". It was as if I wasn't even there and someone else was on trial. On the 2nd day of my trial, my Lawyer, Bruce PETERS, forgot to bring his jacket and tie, so has to sit in the gallery rather than at the side of the Barrister. Of all the evidence I had provided counsel, including 110 pages of phone text messages, all she focused on was one message and didn't use any other information I had provided.
The verdict was "Guilty", sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with 6 months wholly suspended.
Bruce was derelict in his omissions and failure to provide accurate accounts. His Invoice states he only charged me a certain amount and his Trust account statement confirms this, yet my own bank statement proves I made a further $10,000 payment to his Trust Account.
Disappointment would be a gross understatement.

    Dear Ms Alexander,

Our quotes are based on progressive steps in the matter. We would never quote an exorbitant amount upfront, unless it was clear to us that the matter would proceed to trial. We also work to negotiate charges so they are thrown out, if possible.

Could it be that you are reviewing the wrong law firm?

    Regards,
    Bruce Peters
